Timmins Symphony Orchestra and Chorus
Presents Latin Nights
February 24th 2018, 8:00pm
St. Anthony’s Cathedral, 73 Spruce Street North
The night promises to be hot, hot, hot as the Timmins Symphony Orchestra brings a little latin flair to the cold night air.
The TSO invites you to join us for a heart warming evening of Latin inspired music. February is the coldest time of year in Timmins and we want to heat things up with several classic Latin and Spanish-themed orchestral works.
Program selections will include Ernesto Lecuona’s Andalucia Suite with its fiery ending “Malagueña”, the instantly recognizable and fun Tico-Tico by Brazilian composer Zequinha de Abreu that will have you dancing in the aisles, and Canadian composer Michael Conway Baker’s Chanson Joyeuse. Baker has been called the “Canadian master of melody” and has emerged in the last decade as one of North America’s most talented and sought after film and television composers. You will want to put your hands together for Astor Piazzolla’s Libertango or “liberty tango” which since first recorded and published in 1974 has appeared in over 500 separate releases including by such noted artists as Yo-Yo Ma. And no latin- themed program would be complete without a performance of George Bizet’s famous Carmen Suite No. 1. Based on Prosper Mérimée’s novel “Carmen” the warmth of the Spanish countryside is often captured in the form of the gypsy and the bohemian lifestyle of Carmen and others like her is transformed in Bizet’s opera. The distinctive patterns of Spanish dances, including the classic “Les Toréadors” help set the scene. The orchestra will also be performing highlights from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s hit musical Evita and the iconic West Side Story by Leonard Bernstein which will add an extra spark to the evening.
